So what's needed at Albion?

By Chris Lepkowski on Jul 29, 09 02:53 PM

Yesterday's friendly showed that Albion are still some way from being the finished article.

Woefully lacking in numbers up front - who knows if, when, Roman Bednar will return - and lacking numbers at full-back, reinforcements are needed.

Reuben Reid of Rotherham is a big possible, as is Real Betis' German winger David Odonkor is also being strongly considered - the latter is a bit of a long shot, not least as he's had injury problems over the last two years.

Roberto Di Matteo has indicated that a lack of pace is an issue, so those two would fit the bill.

But, equally, they need a couple of defenders, at least one centre-half and full-backs to challenge Zuiverloon and Cech. Abou Meite flattered to deceive against Swindon and Shelton Martis is struggling to get over his Liverpool mistake.

Can't argue much there Chris, Reid would be another gamble like Cox, but for a much lower price. He has the pace but not sure if he'd be ready for the step up.

Cech is a concern at full-back and I just don't think Samuels is ready for the first team yet. How about someone experienced like former Man City defender Michael Ball, available on a free. Zuvi also needs some competition, Nicky Hunt is thought to be available at Bolton and I am sure Gary Megson would be willing to talk.

Meite always flatters to deceive, that's just what he does. I'd put a cheeky bid in for Matthew Kilgallon at Sheffield United.

Any news on Jonno? Have Fulham given up for now?

Pretty spot on there Chris (and Ant!). Pace and experience added to what we have would see us in the top 2.

It would also give us the foundations for a longer stay in the Premiership, should we go up.

Ball is a good call. I would like us to go for a proven goalscorer too. We are very thin up front. The Bednar situation is frustrating and Moore is inconistent. Beattie hasn't quite got what it takes, so that is a priority area, along with cover at RB and LB. A good centre half wouldn't go amiss either, i am not confident with Meite or Martis, except as squad players.

I think RDM is higlighting the right areas though; good early signs.
