Peace, shareholders, unmasked

By Chris Lepkowski on May 21, 09 11:47 PM

There are three things you can be certain of on a quarterly basis - utility bills, the climax of a reality TV show and the Albion Chairman's address to the nation.

Or, in my case, his address to you, Birmingham Mail readers.

So what did he say? Well I can't tell you all, but I ask you to check out the Birmingham Mail website on Friday for news of Albion's two imminent signings.

Bednar? No news as yet. Peace gives his thoughts on the size of the first-team squad for next season, his comments on Tony Mowbray's future, his thoughts on Barry Ferguson and who you may be seeing for the last time this Sunday.

I'll say no more on that.

Elsewhere, those good people from S4A (Shareholders for Albion) invited myself, the Mail's Villa reporter Bill Howell and two colleagues for a forum tonight.

It was a good night, not least when a member of the Sutton Coldfield supporters club branch stood up to deliver his less-than-enthusiastic views about Tony Mowbray's management style.

The young chap was in mid-rant when he felt a tap on the shoulder and turned to find himself staring back at Tony Mowbray.

Or at least we thought it was until Dean Walton removed his mask.

In any case I've got myself a mask. My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter loves it - I thought she'd be terrified to be honest - and I plan to wear the mask at Friday's pre-match press conference.

Let's see how Mowbray likes it.

I cant believe that we're spending 150k on Mulumbu, it's daylight robbery, what a bargain. Shame about Fortune going though, I've read he would only cost. Look's like it will be an interesting summer eh ?

Hold on a second, did I read what Peace said right? That we spent all of the money guaranteed by our parachute payments on wages this season already?! Even though we had, as is well known, the lowest wage budget in the league? Surely Jeremy's taking the Peace? What happened to all the Premiership millions?

You also said in your last blog Chris that you suspect there is money at Albion, "gathering dust." Why? Why isn't Mowbray seeing this money available to him, instead of having to trim his squad by a third and having to rely on untested youngsters should injuries or suspensions pile up?

The fact that Peace isn't mentioning that he'll be trying to sell the club again this summer says it all. When he has a Premiership club to sell, he's all for it. When he has a Championship club, that he couldn't sell for anywhere near as much (even if anyone else actually wanted to buy), he tightens the belt, and tells his manager to raise funds through selling if he wants new players, keeping his dusty profits for the day he can escape. I'm tired of seeing our football club, with all its potential, strangled by its chairman.
