Oh, Jay
HUMILITY, honesty, down-to-earthness. The third one is not a word. But, for want of a Thesaurus, it will have to do for now.
Let's talk Jay Simpson.
Stay with me - this is a long one.
Sometime ago I interviewed Jay for the Sunday Mercury. It was supposed to be a quirky piece about his love for Ten-Pin Bowling.
Apparently he's quite good. Each to their own, but that's just my view.
During the course of the interview, Jay told me that the move to Albion hadn't gone as well as he would have hoped. He wouldn't elaborate too much.
I asked him about next season. Tony Mowbray had told us, a week earlier, that he wanted to sign Simpson next season.
Jay clearly wasn't keen on the question. He made it clear he was an Arsenal lad. And, let's face it, if you had a choice of the fourth best club in the country or the 20th, your choice would be made up.
Of course, chances are that Jay won't make it at Arsenal. Just as Kieran Richardson didn't do it at Manchester United.
It's possible Jay will even slip down the leagues.
Right now, we simply don't know. Even Kwame Ampadu had to start somewhere before he pitched up at The Hawthorns.
That Jay Simpson interview went out on a Sunday. By the afternoon, and by Monday, it had appeared on other websites and in other publications - some of whom should know better. The spin was frightening. The fall-out more so.
One major news organisation claimed that Jay wanted to leave there and then. One said that he would be leaving immediately. They used the quotes from my piece to illustrate this.
At no point did he say that. At no point did I say that.
I'm no apologist for Jay. He's been poor for some time, he is desperately lacking confidence, he looks more League One right now than Premier League and I'm not one for his new haircut. I prefered the Mr T look.
Nevertheless, let's get down to mythology.
'Jay Simpson is a disgrace - he doesn't want to be here', raged one text message from an Albion-supporting mate to me two weeks ago.
On the contrary, he does. He just doesn't chase lost causes or bleat about how wonderful life is at Albion. False bravado, Tony Mowbray would call it.
'Jay Simpson should be sent back to Arsenal', said one mate on my Facebook chat during one late-night conversation.
Not possible, due to the loan conditions. So I'm told.
Many more, scanning websites and letters pages, have questionned his commitment.
I can't argue with the fact that he is more 'out' than 'in' the first XI. His form has been woeful.
But he shouldn't be booed on the back of quotes where he has been misrepresented.
A lack of form or ability is not, necessarily, his fault. Nor is it his fault that he's picked to play by someone else.
You can read what Tony Mowbray thinks in today's Birmingham Mail story here.
So what about Jay the footballer?
A Premier League player? Maybe not. Desperate to leave Albion? Depends which newspaper or website you read. Not according to us he wasn't. He's ambitious. Which is fair enough.
Arrogant and obnoxious? No chance. For goodness sake, this is a man who goes Ten-Pin Bowling to amuse himself. And, worse still, admits to being good at it.
His main vices are stepping over the line or hurling a purple one down the gutter.
Jay Simpson is simply a kid whose only weakness was to be honest during an interview and, subsequently, be stitched up by people who steal quotes from those of us who actually interview people face-to-face. They wouldn't know Jay Simpson from an ex-US footballer who starred in Naked Gun and might, just might, have done something worse.
His inclusion on a team sheet may deserve groans, the scratching of heads and sarcastic laughter. But, from what I know of him, it doesn't warrant abuse. He's simply guilty of being naive.
I'll leave you with this. A few weeks ago, some Albion fans were queuing outside the gates of the training ground. Each and every player stopped - bar one. I won't say who, as there might have been mitigating reasons why.
But Jay Simpson pulled over, got out of his car, shook hands, signed items and had his picture taken with the kids, who were accompanied by adults. He didn't have to. Simply signing his autograph would have been enough.
Those kids have something to tell their mates at school. It was a significant gesture on his part.
I wonder how that could get spun?
'Premier League footballer harrasses autograph hunters', perhaps?

Yes its unfortunate that Jay has been bought up to play in the style of Arsenal but is left chasing many no hope balls where he plays with his back towards the opposition. This doesn't suit him at all.
It's ridiculous that he, as a loan player should be booed for what is, as you say, a loss of form.
He is simply going to do exactly the same as Richardson which is hope to return to fight for a place at a top 4 club.(Don't remember anyone booing Richardson).
What would you expect Arsene Wengers attitude to any further loans be after Simpson reports back that he was booed by the crowd? Wouldn't blame him if he refused to consider loaning any other players to us in future.
Dave,
I had to remove your comment as it alludes to something a little more sinister, which could cause us legal issues.
We've had emails about this and it's been checked out.
Jay actually lives in Birmingham City Centre - near the Mailbox. The football club also has a very stringent policy on curfews and other such matters which may breach discipline. My understanding is that people, including those who mailed us, have put 2 and 2 together and got it wrong.
Please feel free to email me on chris.lepkowski@birminghammail.net if you want to chat about this any more.
We don't normally delete comments and your views are always welcome. Thanks for your initial post and if you wish to re-submit then please feel free.

Hi Chris,
I don't think the boo's was anything to do with Jay's comments, it's more to do with his body attitude while on the pitch. He was playing at bloody left back at times against Sunderland and was jogging forward. I hope it doesn't affect future loans with Arsenal. You can tell he's a decent player just look at that he did against Middlesbrough and Villa away but he's heart isn't in it sadly. Wouldn't mind Rhys Murphy of the Arsenal next year though!
Hi Dan
Thanks for comments. Maybe you're right to some degree. Jay isn't the sort who is going to run 50 yards to barge someone else out of the way.
His demeanour on the pitch does him few favours but then some players cut that kind of figure - Kanu was often accused of being lazy I recall.
Hi Chris. I was quite disappointed with the booing of Jay Simpson..for me it tainted the victory. I've never booed a player..and i genuinely don't think he deserved it. He looked devastated at the end of the game..and quickly made his exit down the tunnel. For me fans are not discriminating between whether he is actually good enough and his so called negative comments regarding Albion. In my opinion he is naive and not ready for the Premier League but that does not mean he does not care. Is he good enough should be the question? I can understand and agree..he gives the impression that he does not care. But Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes are similar in their demeanuor. I think the expectations on him were too much for him and consequently he has lost his form. I remember Fergsuon..discussing younger players and he stated that some players found it a burden being a 'star' player at another club rather then be surrounded by the talent United can possess. I have nothing against Jay..and wish him the best. If he was to come on against Liverpool and score the winning goal..would the fans be singing "There is only One Jay Simpson"...
Also with all due respect to Albion..as much as it hurts me to say it..who wouldn't try and do everything to be succesful for Arsenal!? Though i'd never play for them..a Baggie till i die!
Hi Chris, have you any idea of Marc Antoine Fortunes thoughtsd on staying with albion next season?
Thanks for your comments.
Phil -I have requested an interview with Marc but told his English isn't good enough!
However, I'm told (by a third party) that he's happy here and is enjoying his time here. He's also bought into what Tony Mowbray wants to do.
Inevitably, that may not be enough to keep him if Albion go down. The agents will be quick to start touting him around. You could argue that they already have...
Chris
I've never booed a Baggies player before or during a game. Disagree with it totally. It doesn't help MY team. Jay Simpson got booed by some sections & it WAS for his comments. Fans DO believe what they read & what they read regarding Jay made him look a right big-head that thought he was too big for us. I wish him all the best & hope Arsene's still happy to loan us the odd player now & again.
Wouldn't mind knowing who the 'billy big-shot' at the Albion is though Chris. You know, the one who won't sign autographs for our young fans. Any clues???
