Two in and counting...

By Chris Lepkowski on Aug 31, 08 09:16 PM

Rejoice, transfer deadline day is almost upon us again.

Stand by your beds, Monday could be a long day.

Two centre-halves have all but checked in already.

Olsson we know about. The Swede has signed from Dutch club NEC Nijmegen.

He's been joined by Ryan Donk, who will join on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent move, as already revealed by his club AZ Alkmaar.

So who else is coming?

Albion need strikers. David Nugent has been mentioned in today's press but I'm hearing otherwise. He certainly hasn't been on the radar up to now. But don't rule it out just yet. A player who isn't an option can suddenly become a consideration as the clock ticks down. It's happened before with Rob Earnshaw (back in 2004) and, more recently, we were told that Luke Moore wasn't a target...then he was...then he wasn't...then he signed.

But, as I write this, Nugent remains unlikely.

He isn't the only striker being looked at. I'll reveal in tomorrow's Birmingham Mail (and website) the name of another English-based forward Albion have looked into bringing on loan, as well as a midfielder.

Leaving? It'll be interesting to see which peripheral players will still be at the Hawthorns come midnight tomorrow.

There's a small chance that it could even be the end of an era too...

More about that and the rest of the transfer news in Monday's paper and on birminghammail.net

Hi Chris. A mate of mine who is a Tottenham fan has said that he has heard through the grapevine that Albion are interested in midfielders Adel Taarabt and Kevin Prince Boateng. I heard the Taarabt rumour a while ago but i didnt hear of Boateng being linked to the Albion. From what i know Taarbat can play across the midfield and is a technical player who is only 19. Boateng who was bought from £4.5 million last year is a physical yet technical central midfielder. Also Juande Ramos has not given them squad numbers for this season so therefore im assuming that they dont figure in the immediate future at least. My gut feeling is that my mate is trying to wind me up! But i thought id put it to you as i trust you above all other sources.

Distraught Baggies fan. Why no striker?

Cant believe we are going into season with THREE forwards, none of which are proven at this level.Distraught sums it up. We let Phillips go..and in FOUR months we havent replaced him. And Dave someone was definitely trying to wind you up. Even Stoke signed players...Soar, Tonge and Higginbotam. They were even in for Pennant and Ledley. Ambition shown by them. Hull sign Cousin..Albion sign NO STRIKER! THATS MY RANT OVER..IM OFF TO WORK.

Very disapointed and frustrated because i felt we were only one good striker away from being a team which could not only survive but consolidate our position in the prem but who knows now...

TO ALL ALBION FANS:

I know we haven’t signed a striker as we all expected but WE MUST back the manager in knowing what he is doing. Like I have said many a time on here he is the best manager we have ever had in my life time (I’m nineteen). I’ve witnessed Buckley, Harford, Smith, Little, Megson and Robson.
None of the above are as articulate as Mr Mowbray, a young exciting British manager who builds me with confidence, who makes me believe that Albion are not just in the Premiership this year to make up the numbers. We are here to compete.
Quite simply, The Baggies are not among the three worst footballing sides in The Premier League, not on the evidence of their showing against Everton last week, and not on their showing against Bolton at The Reebok. Will we have that cutting edge? Only time will tell. But we must back Mowbray and the team, in particular the strike force.
When I first heard that we wouldn’t be signing anyone despondency crept into me, I had seen Stoke sign Higginbottam, Soares and Tonge. Then I was ponderous. A good night’s sleep it wasn’t, still left me with more questions rather then answers. Admittedly they are not strikers but I felt that they were showing ambition, especially when I found out they were in for both Pennant and Ledley.
Then I thought. “Would you rather have them then Zuiverloon, Valero and Kim Do Heon? Thought so. Also Hull signed Daniel Cousin, a bolt out of the blue, but keeping everything in perspective is he any better to what we already have?
Although I know at this moment in time many Baggies fans will be frustrated we must look at the BIGGER PICTURE.
Admittedly we all expected a striker but nothing has come to fruition and therefore we must back the managers’ ability to get the best out of our strike force until January at least which in my opinion is: Ishmael Miller, Luke Moore and Roman Bednar.
Also we have Sherjill MacDonald who can play wide left, right and through the middle. In addition there is Craig Beattie and Bartosz Slusarski. Admittedly if Rio Ferdinand was reading this, I very much doubt he would get sleepless nights.
However if Mr Peace has not gone the extra mile then I for one would be very despondent. Could it have been a missed opportunity?
“IN MOWBRAY WE TRUST

P.S Chris. What happened with Oscar Trejo? Is he still a target for January?
Heard we had a last minute bid for Kevin Thomson rejected? Is there any truth in this matter?

Spot on Dave. That should be published in the Mail Chris. Well written piece. Chris, you can tell Mowbray that us Baggies fans will always back him. P.S. DONT LISTEN TO WM LISTEN TO DAVE!

Dave said:

Cheers mate. Agreed. Dont really listen to WM prefer the legend that is Tom Ross and Tony "Bomber" Brown. They speak sense and in addition ive got more respect for them then i have for any of the BBC WM presenters put together.

RE:PETE

We all share your concerns and views, and there can be no doubt TM and JP tried for several strikers without paying silly money for players who might only be as good as we have already - De Sutter, Nugent, etc, but they didn't work out. We were one player short of being very happy Baggies this morning, but we've still made some top signings and improved the squad no end, and we have to move on now, at least till the January window. Boing boing!
