Gera way
Here's a choice for you - Everton, Portsmouth, Bolton or Fulham?
What would you choose?
Zoltan Gera has gone for Fulham.
I was as shocked as most people will be when I heard the news yesterday tea-time.
Portsmouth and Everton could offer him Uefa Cup football and in Pompey's case the opportunity of regular first-team football - Utaka is their only recognised wide man.
So why Fulham?
Footballing wise it's a strange call. Fulham barely survived last year and there have been suggestions that Al-Fayed was growing weary of seeing his investment making little progress and was considering selling-up. Was it the lure of London? Having lived there for many years I can't imagine why anyone would want to live there but each to their own.
Which leaves money.
Let's look at it from Gera's point of view. At 29-years-old it'll be the last major contract he'll sign in the Premier League. It will set-up him for life financially. What's more you can guarantee there will be a rather hefty signing on fee waiting for him.
You can't blame an employee for leaving one job for a better paid job elsewhere.
For Albion it's a bitter blow losing a player to a club who finished in the position the Baggies will be seeking to finish in themselves.
Will they replace him? I've heard great things about Do-Heon Kim and we all know James Morrison can play there. And then there's Albion's pursuit of Radoslaw Majewski and Paddy McCourt to consider. Not to mention young Dorrans, although the Premier League may be too soon for him. How about Taarabt? Throw in a certain Teixeira returning around October time. Actually Albion aren't that badly stocked, even with the personnel they have now.
At least Albion will finally get closure. The moment Gera signs on that dotted line - sometime next week when Fulham have completed their management reshuffle - will be the point Albion can properly start preparing for next season.

So Albion's statement yesterday afternoon was a case of "We've done our best, here is our side of the story" before news broke off where he was off to.
I'm disappointed in Gera. If your ambitious, go to Everton or Portsmouth. Its a step up from us without doubt
The likes of Jeff Astle (& family) and Bob Taylor, who have taken Albion to their hearts, are few and far between.
The saddest thing I have ever heard is the question Jeff Astle asked his wife Larraine as he gazed upon the picture of his celebration in the '68 Cup Final, when the illness he suffered had started to wipe his memory:
'Was it Fulham?'
This isn't sad; just more than a bit mystifying.
Perhaps Zoltan The Great should have a little word with Mrs Astle before he puts pen to paper, but I guess the likelihood of that, or his understanding of it if he did, is about as remote as him ever feeling what goes on inside the head of an Albion legend.
He is just about to prevent himself from ever becoming one.
Tara.
The move was inevitable but lets not forget Zoltan has never given less than 100%,was a member of a team that won the Championship and deserves our best wished for the future.
Thanks you Zoltan. You'll go down as probably our best ever foreign player.
Let's face it, he's got a better chance of avoiding relegation with Fulham compared to Sandwell Albion
It's the Harrods card which swayed it....
But Mrs G what is Harrods after the delights of Merry Hill and West Brom igh street?
Gera has to have a quick think about why he wants out. If he wants european football then fine, but Fulham???? We can just put this down to the money.
A good player will be a good player no matter who he plays for and he could be great player at albion.
And like every other story in the media it is unofficial chinese whispers again, phillips to leeds ? greening to celtic ? gera to....take your pick. Until he signs for whoever he is still an albion player and could still stay.
Sorry no1baggiesfan (which I doubt you are) but you have to take stories on their individual merit. IT's fairly obvious that local papers are close to the clubs, the Mail more than any other from my experience of reading their stories.
When somebody like Chris L who has been covering us for so long and is well connected in the club states that then it wont be a 'Chinese Whisper'.
I work in PR and know how the media works. Some you trust more than others. The tabloid press I know can be unpredictable. CL is reliable as you will read in the local media.
I also happen to get every paper delivered. I have not read about Greening going to Celtic in ANY paper so far so whose starting the chinese whispers now?
I have a limited knowledge of football clubs from my own work in PR. I also know that some one in the press (whether it's local or national) will have a 101 more contacts and accessibility to the club and 'sources' than you or I will ever have. What I find tedious is know-it-alls, normally bitter at other's closeness to a football club, being unable to accept that people out there may know more than them.
Yes Gera is still our player. but if you think the stories about Fulham are Chinese Whispers then you are more naive than I imagined. Even in my limited circles I've heard that this is a done deal.
If it's filtered down to someone like myself then you can bet that theres more to it than a rumour.
Ben
The news on where Gera is going has been news for weeks now, I dont want to sound rude but "filtered down" is way off the mark, plastered everywhere is more like it lol, this story is everywhere with Gera being linked to at least 8 clubs, appologies for the greening story, it was Rangers he was linked with, that WAS in the mail on 8 June.
No offence but until he actually signs for Fulham then I wont beleive it, I dont think he'll stay but thats football. I remember last year with the Curtis Davis saga, he too was linked with a number of clubs and Villa were one of the last mentioned.
thank god the birmingham mail have chris lepowski reporting for them, not you. LOL!
It was fairly common knowledge from around thursday- Friday last week where gera was going. And since that point I haven't seen Gera linked with ANY other club
it's been confirmed by the way - in case you're still doubting it
Good riddance to him by the way
ok, ok, so he went to Fulham as reported by mr Lepowski, apologies Chris, as usual money talks and another greed motivated footballer leaves the baggies, yes Ben, good riddance, players like this are not wanted in football.
I for one commend both the chairman and Tony for some very shrewd moves in the transfer market in getting rid of some greedy players and ego driven ones too, mentioning no-names Curtis.
I trust tomo to get a better player in soon, if not theres always tex or morrison, but I'd like to see Barnes, if hes not injured join up.
Im glad we can move on. this speculation was a nightmare.
I just hope we can get Super Kev's future sorted.
Geras saga just typifies the nonsense of footballers today. We're told for weeks that the player will go when we've proved our ambition yet he goes and joins a club that only just stayed up last season.
Perhaps Im blind but how on earth have Fulham shown any signs of ambition during the last few weeks since the season finished?
As usual we are fed drivel via the agents about players and ambition when all they are interested in is money.
Im absolutely gutted geras gone but at least now we know what hes all about. Itll be interesting to see how he performs now that he no longer needs a contract. Me thinks we'll see the same Gera we saw for the 2 middle years of his west brom career.
Gera has made a big mistake. its one thing going for ambition but leaving for money AND MONEY only has done him no favours.
Talking of MONEY.
Is the reason we are now up for sale behind any of this ????
I doubt it, but you never know.
He will always be welcome back at the Shrine. But not too disappointed to see him go to be honest.
Yes he was great last season and his first season for us, but the 2 years in-between weren't that clever.
At 29 not sure his best years are ahead of him and I think we have plenty of replacements lined up at the club already.
So best of luck Zoltan, wish you all the best and the more money you get out of Fayed the better!
