Albion get a bit shirty

By Chris Lepkowski on May 18, 2008 4:33 PM |

Word reaches me that a number of Albion websites have been politely asked to pull leaked photos of the new home and away shirts for 2008/09.

Makes you wonder what the big secret is, not least as I had a sneaky look myself and couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

In case you're wondering...yes, Albion will be wearing blue and white stripes next year. Just for a change.

The away shirt? Well, that would be telling...

Oh, what the hell, it's yellow.

Off topic: last year in pre-season, you reviewed a game against Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) and hinted that Crvena Zvezda is a temporary name of the football club. Well, let me tell you - it was Crvena Zvezda when they won against WBA in the UEFA Cup in 1979, still Crvena Zvezda when they won the Champions League in 1991 and have been Crvena Zvezda since 1945.

Red Star.

Thanks for your comments. I don't recall saying that Crvena Zvezda was the 'temporary' name - although I stand to be corrected if I did, or implied that it was. However I did mention that the club was now known as Crvena Zvezda, simply from chatting to those who knew the club.
I was told, by those who work at the club, that Crvena Zvezda was the local name of the club and how it was now known internationally since the break up of the old Yugoslavia. Although it's always been Crvena Zvezda, it's internationally been known as Red Star Belgrade over the years. And many still call it that - indeed I had many a debate with Albion officials on how the club should be addressed in match reports and when mentioned in copy.
As I'm not from Croatia myself I cannot vouch for the history of the club or the origins of its colloquial or proper name but only go on what I'm told by those who work for the club and follow
the club.
The words for Red Star in Polish are Czerwona Gwiazda so I already knew where the name was coming from...

Thanks for your reply and shedding some light on this.
