Shooters

By Brian Halford on Apr 18, 11 04:03 PM

Fifty years ago Worcestershire beat Warwickshire by 134 runs at New Road when the Bears, chasing 238 to win, were bowled out for 103, Flavell taking five for 30 and Gifford five for 34.

Flavell bowled Horner, Ratcliffe, Bridge and Thompson, hitting the off-stump each time, and dismissed Kennedy lbw, all of his five victims falling to 'shooters' on a pitch that started off damp on the first morning and was in a right old state by the third afternoon.

Ron Headley, with 55, his highest score so far for Worcestershire, was the only player to pass 50 in the match.

A month earlier at New Road, Yorkshire had won by one wicket after Don Wilson went in at number 11 with his left arm in plaster from the elbow to the knuckles due to a fractured thumb and drove Flavell, one-handed, for three fours in an unbeaten 29 out of a ninth-wicket stand of 37 with Bob Platt.
