Warwickshire feel a bit aggrieved by some umpiring decisions. Smith, on 38, survived a huge caught-behind shout off Woakes and, on 40, an even bigger lbw appeal from Clarke who looked aghast at the explanation from the official. Di Venuto, on 43, survived a good lbw shout from Miller.

That said, the batsmen have been very much in control. Clarke was the pick of the bowlers but Best had two overs before tea and from the very last ball before the interval Di Venuto made a bit of a statement to the debutant by striding down the wicket and lifting him over mid-wicket for four.
