Bears set to emulate 1911 triumph

By Brian Halford on Apr 11, 11 12:00 PM

I have a sneaky feeling that Warwickshire are going to record a glorious and poignant triumph this year by winning the championship exactly 100 years after Frank Foster's magnificent side first brought the title to Edgbaston in 1911.

Poignantly, the Bears will clinch the title on the very last day of the season, just as Foster's men did. And even more poignant than that, they will do so after bowling out Hampshire at the Rose Bowl in the nick of time just as Foster's team skittled Northamptonshire with rain looming. And just as, back on the night of August 28, 1911, Foster and his players stayed up all through the night before the crucial final day, drinking and playing cards and billiards in the hotel bar to keep the tension at bay, Troughton and his team will spend the entire night of September 14, 2011 in the hotel bar, just to be sure of taking the field in a relaxed and tension-free state on the vital final morning of the season.

Ah yes, it's going to be groovy this year. We all know what a nightmare Warwickshire suffered with the bat in 2010 but, intriguingly, every single player in their top and middle order has a lot to prove this season. When the going gets tough...

Last year they floundered as a unit. This time they will collectively thrive.

I predict that Warwickshire will win the championship, reach the Clydesdale 40 semi-final and fail to qualify from the Twenty20 group stage. However I would be very interested to hear predictions from people who do know what they are talking about.

I welcome all forecasts as to Warwickshire's fortunes in the three main competitions this season. Anyone who gets all three correct will be able to choose from a selection of illustrious prizes: a Colchester United parking voucher (February 2010), a Walsall v Dagenham & Redbridge ticket stub (slightly soiled), and a match-worn Walsall v Bristol Rovers team-sheet.

Please place your predictions by 6.37pm on Thursday April 14 and nominate your preferred prize.

I predict that Warwickshire will stage another successful battle against relegation, a forgettable CB40 season, and a T20 semi-final defeat in front of their own fans.

I also predict floodlight failures and an idiosyncratic scoreboard.

And I predict that I will end up having to phone up the ticket booking agency to get a ticket for the first home game following several failures to do so via the interwebsite.

But then, I'm a pessimist. If I wasn't, I'd support Durham.

Hampshire to win Championship, Warwickshire to finish fifth

Sussex to win CB40 League, Warwickshire to win 4 of their 12 group games, lose 5 and have three no-results, thereby missing out on semis.

Durham to win T20 Cup, Warwickshire to win 5 of their 16 group games and lose nine, thereby missing out on finals day.

Prince William and Princess Kate to divorce after six days.

I will predict after Taunton if thats ok. Or does that rule me out of the wonderful prizes?

Hi folks, thanks for your entries.
Jane - unless your entry is in by 6.37pm on Thursday April 14, as stated, I'm afraid that, even if correct in all competitions come September, it will not be eligible for the illustrious prizes.
Do you really want to take that risk?

I think they will go down in the championship, finish bottom of the clydesdale, not qualify from the 20/20 and have lots of injuries.

Relegation in the championship.
CB 40 semi-finalists
20/20 quarter-finalists
Could I have the Walsall v Bristol Rovers team-sheet and,as you were spotted at Hampton Road on Saturday, your signed copy of the Racing Club Warwick v Walsall Wood matchday magazine

Hi John - I'm afraid there were no programmes on sale at the home of football last Saturday. I was told it was due to technical difficulties but, as paying punters numbered a rather modest 17, I wonder if they just decided not to bother!

Ok here we go, 3rd in Championship, retain CB40 fail to quaify for 20/20 finals day at home. Jim Troughton to have a great year,Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott to star in all England/WCCC games. I now need to lay down with the effort.

3rd in the Championship behind Lancashire winning it for the first time for years due in large part to playing most of their home matches away from Old Trafford and Yorkshire finishing 2nd.

Top of the CB40 group stage but lose the home semi final to Sussex in a bowl out.

Qualify for T20 Finals day, go on then, maybe even win the darn thing.

2nd XI Trophy winners
2nd XI Championship 4th
2nd XI T20x2 eliminated at the first stage mercifully!

Keep up to date
