Thunder, lightning and a slight error of judgement.

By Brian Halford on Aug 4, 10 03:41 PM

RAIN STOPPED PLAY: Essex 149 for 9 (43.5 overs). Palladino 31, Carter 2.

A truly spectacular storm, with rain of the heaviest variety and thunder and lightning, swept the ground leaving steady drizzle in its wake. It was a memorably fierce downpour, thundering into the tents as fork-lightning danced in the distance, which set in about ten minutes after a former Essex player of some repute popped into the press tent, assessed the overhead conditions and announced with confidence that the rain will miss Garon Park.

Never mind they still made enough progress to win the game even with the rain.

Hello Brian,

I hope the Bears can finish the lower order resistence early and start building a challenging total today.

Interesting to note that a young spinner called Maurice Holmes is playing for the seconds at Rugby. Is he the same cricketer who was at Kent who can bowl like Murali?

If I recall correctly, he was hired by the New Zealanders in preparation for their Sri Lanka tour because of his similarity to the 800 wicket legend.

Morning Caveman. Well, the Bears have done what you requested re finishing off the Essex innings.
Yes, Maurice Holmes is the "Muralialike."

Has he, or is he signing for the Bears? Could be our long term replacement for that other Doosra deliverer from Kent, Alex Loudon!

It's just a trial arrangement at the moment, Caveman. But a spin-bowler is pretty high on the agenda of Bears' needs for next season in all forms of cricket. Imran Tahir is going and Paul Best will be at university so at the moment it'll just be Ant Botha.

Hi Brian, do you think Essex are in the box seat now? It should only need one decent stand between any of the top order of the Bears to see us home, surely?!

Secondly, the Essex commentators seem to think highly of Bryce McGain , perhaps the Bears could look to him as a spinner for next season? Would he count as an overseas player?

brian said:

Hi Flanders. Yes, I'd say Essex are favourites now. Not because batting conditions are anything horrendous but simply due to the Bears' fragile confidence.
Yes, McGain would count as an overseas player so that would scupper him as I think Warwickshire will look to recruit a batsman from overseas.
