When Billie Jo Spears appeared at Sincil Bank at a fund-raising music "festival" for Lincoln City in 1981 the stage collapsed under the weight of torrential rain which kept the attendance on the first night down to below 100. The event made a huge loss.

"I Love Lincoln," said Billie Jo, "but I'm looking forward to getting back to Texas."

Her affection for Lincoln is understood to have diminished when the cheque from the festival organisers bounced.
