Ashley Giles' thoughts after the Durham game.
Warwickshire are understood to have offered a short-term deal to Australian batsman Michael Dighton, though Ashley Giles would not confirm that.
After the Durham game the director of cricket did, however, acknowledge the need for urgent investment in the squad.
These are his views as passed on to Radio WM's Richard Wilford and myself.
"The ball certainly did a bit with the cloud cover and everything and Harmy bowled very well but it's disappointing when at one point we lost 9 for 6. We had high hopes about wearing this target down slowly and got nowhere near it and that's disappointing to everyone in the dressing-room and not good enough as well.
"For periods of this game we have battled really hard so we have to take the positives out of it, we have got no option, but we also have to look at the negatives and see where we have got problems again. We are not getting enough runs.
"We are working very hard at it. What can you do? You can try naughty-boy nets and be in the nets every hour that is available but that doesn't do any good. We scrapped hard and scrapped pretty well in the first innings even though we were behind the eight-ball at times and all we can do is keep working hard. But we are obviously short in certain departments and we are missing our two big guys. We never expected to see a lot of Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott's career is going upwards and onwards as well. But with an injury to Varun Chopra on top of that we are short of batting and the guys in the side have got to get us some scores on the board.
"There is certainly a gap between our good young players and the guys who are in the first team but our senior players, by their own admission, are not getting enough runs and we are just not getting starts so we are always having to fight from a position of weakness and behind the game and against good sides and very good bowlers you are not going to overcome them.
"Every day's cricket comes around very quickly at the moment so while we have enjoyed our one-day stuff the championship has been hard, really hard. But you have to try and keep the guys confident. You have to go through dismissals and look at them realistically. I thought Ateeq's was a little unlucky and Troughts got a stonking delivery, basically a fast off-break, from Claydon. If that happens then fair enough but we are not getting enough runs at the top of the order.
"We are working on that but also looking at options to help us through it. I think we have got some good cricketers but we are going to miss two world-class batsmen for quite a period. Therefore I do believe we are going to have to invest in quality in the batting department. That doesn't mean that what we haven't got is not good enough but bringing in more quality raises the standard all round. Some guys are going to be out of form, some guys are going to struggle, and, at the moment, we don't have the luxury of saying to someone 'you're struggling a little bit, go back to the second team because this guy is is ready'. We need more strength in depth in our batting department and to get that we are going to have to spend some money."

At last! The King of Spain recognises that we need some depth in the batting department. Signing someone of Dighton's calibre would be a step in the right direction
I sense the same scenario at Edgbaston to many a football club. A coach/manager being asked to operate on a woefully inadequate budget.
I wish I didn't have to say told you so.
Simply the batters are just not good enough.
