Remarkable win for 2nds

By Brian Halford on Jun 8, 10 06:03 PM

Warwickshire recorded a remarkable win over Derbyshire in the Second XI Trophy today with the game completed in 15.4 overs.
After rain delayed the start at Dunstall, reducing the game to 25 overs per side, Derbyshire were all out for 35 (Keith Barker 5-2-9-5, Tom Milnes 4.3-0-25-5). The clatter was due to good bowling rather than a dodgy pitch as suggested by the Bears cruising to 37 for one in the seventh over, Jimmy Ord 15 not out and Barker 16 not out.

Yes Jane its unfortunate that young Barker hasnt produced this in the first team. But then the standard is far greater.

May I also add that without Tahir we'd not have a great deal to write home about regards our bowlers in the first team. likewise without trott bell and maddy our batting hasnt been great either.

we must remeber that 2009 was Barkers fist full season he finished off with 2nd team player iof the year topping both the batting and bowling averages for the club. He then finished 2nd in the 20/20 bowling averages for the club and then 4th in the natwest pro 40 bowling averages for the club. This performace must have bneen noted as he then went on to be chosen for the ECB performance camp in South africa earlier this year!!

Barker for me has the potential to go further in the game and im confident that he will start to produce the figures in time to come. granted i'd like this sooner rather tahn later. May I add that he is a great batsmen and for me should be batting higher than 8 /9 / 10.

He has shown that irrespective of the situation he is faced with when he comes out to bat. He grasp the moment and doesnt give much away unlike our so called senior members of the team batting at the top.

At the end of the day Barker, Woakes, and Rankin can become great bowlers and all rounders when we look at Barker and Woakes with the bat.

Support is needed not only from the team but ourselves as spectators.

Too many of you talk a good game on the terraces !!! and its quite easy to be a great player when your watching from the side.

Hi Dean - yes I agree about support needed from the spectators though I think, bearing in mind the recent champo form, the Edgbaston regulars have, on the whole, been very patient.
Think you are a bit harsh when you say "without Tahir we'd not have a great deal to write home about regards our bowlers in the first team". I think Miller has bowled well and Woakes better than his figures suggest.

Hi Brian.

I must admit support has been good recently and yes thats down to the fact that in the Championship we've done extremely well. But i await the comments from the terrace should a few results not go our way and form begin to dip from those whom we expect more from each time the players take to the field.

For me I think as a club we are certainly heading in the right direction and have a great set up for the youth and more importantly we have a crop of prosperous young talented players such as Barker, Woakes, Miller whom in time to come i believe have the ability to become first class players and go all the way to international level.

Woakes and barker have both taken 4 wickets in an individual match last season and im confident they will produce those types of figures again during this season. We mustn't forget that Miller on the other hand has had two 5 wicket hauls last season and again I'd like to see that this season too.

What we need is encouragement, support and a positive vibe from the crowd to help these individuals progress. What we dont need are comments questioning why a player cant bring his second team form in to the first team.

You made a great comment regards Chris Woakes figures and the fact that he has bowled well but yet the figures arent great at times. This is true but then like Barker and Miller it has been the same for them, a few dot balls and then the batsmen produces a shot to a ball considered a good line or length, and its dispatched for 4 or 6. You cant set a field at times for some batsmen especially in 20/20 games. If i use the 20/20 format as an example. Despite the bowler bowling to his field we're seeing an increasing number of improvised shots from batsmen making the bowler look average. It takes 2 boundaries in an over to make your figures look bad even when youve bowled 2 or 3 dot balls.

When you think back to our first 20/20 game this season which we won convincingly, our bowlers bowled well, especially Tahir taking his 3 wickets. Woakes, Maddy and Barker averaged 10 runs per over which in a championship game would be considered poor but in 20/20 is considered a good over.

However some individuals who've never played the game, see a bowler go for a boundary or 2 in an over and thats when we get the negative views on that individuals performance.

Woakes has had a good season so far and been rewarded with his England lions call up. I see the likes of Barker and miller achieving the same in the next few seasons. But its time and patience. remember alot of cricketers hit their peak in their late 20's early 30's. its their younger days where we get glimpses of their potential and what they can become in time with the right guidance.
