Bourne sinks Somerset

By Brian Halford on Jun 1, 10 10:26 PM

Warwickshire v Somerset at Edgbaston, 1975.

Somerset 308 for 4
Warwickshire 277
Somerset 218
Warwickshire 252 for 9.

Derek Taylor scored a century to lift Somerset to a solid total in their allocated 100 overs in the first innings and this was enough to bring them a lead of 31 after A.A.Jones (bless 'im) took four wickets in a Bears reply which featured 121 from John Whitehouse and two leg-byes.
Bill Bourne then moved to the centre of the plot for the rest of a match which built into a thrilling crescendo. Bourne took four for 61 as no Somerset player reached 50 in their second innings against accurate bowling which brought nine of the ten wickets bowled or lbw. Warwickshire required 250 in the last session and a half and were advanced niftily towards that target by Smiths MJK and KD, with 72 and 52 respectively. Dennis Breakwell (no relation) took three wickets to reduce the Bears to 209 for eight but Bourne hit lustily and, with sturdy support from Peter Lewington, took the score to 247 for nine. Botham trapped Lewington lbw with three runs still required for victory but Bourne, with an unbeaten 36, saw his team to victory abetted by a steel-nerved unbeaten 0 from Steve Perryman.

Both umpires had four initials the first of which was A.
