The view from Denmark
In 1956, Bill Bowes' proposal that the lbw law should be amended so that a batsman could be adjudged lbw from any delivery pitching outside off-stump, irrespective of the position of his legs [NOTE: the batsman's legs, not Bill Bowes'] was warmly supported by the Danish Cricket Association.
The Danes added a note of caution, however, suggesting that it was "a good idea but difficult to administrate as batsmen would probably pad-up by getting to the pitch of the ball outside off-stump so that the umpire could never be certain of the size of the break."
