Lancashire v Warwickshire. Old Trafford. 1979.

Warwickshire 359 for 4
Lancashire 208 and 469 for 9
Match drawn.

After losing opening John Claughton for a duck, Warwickshire were lifted to a meaty total by a magnificent 184 from Dennis Amiss who struck 11 fours and then, just to show it was no fluke, hit another 11.

Spinner Chris Clifford then got among the Lancashire bastman with 5 for 96, well-supported by Anton Ferreira (15-8-18-3) and, despite profiting from six leg-byes, the home side had to follow-on. Openers Barry Wood and David Lloyd soon fell and, despite Clive Lloyd's 93, Lancashire appeared destined for defeat at 230 for seven. Their salvation came in the unexpected form of maiden centuries for wicket-keeper John Lyon and "Bouncing" Bob Ratcliffe who added 158 - a county record - for the eighth wicket and saw their side to safety.
