The class of Dollery
Strolling round Southend we ended up in Westcliff. Brought to mind one of the finest innings ever played for Warwickshire, Tom Dollery's masterly 156 against Essex at Westcliff in 1955. On a turning pitch, Dollery batted with immense skill and technique to make 156 out of the Bears' 269 all out, much the decisive innings in a low-scoring match which Warwickshire won by 142 runs as Eric Hollies followed 29.2-17-36-3 in Essex's first innings with 22.4-11-42-8 in the second.
Essex played home championship cricket at Ilford, Colchester, Westcliff, Romford, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Clacton and Southend that year.

Well the clock is rapidly ticking to the new season. We have the pink balls and day night curtain raiser next week between MCC and Durham in warmer places and then onto our game against Yorks with one or two friendlies possibly dotted around.
Must pay my membership.................. the clocks go forward this weekend ...... the new season is nearly here !!!
Hi Warley, yes it's almost that time again. Let's hope above all that, for what is likely to be effectively the last season of the county championship (before it is sliced up into three groups of six and becomes totally secondary to T20) the weather is warm and dry. After the last two grey, wet seasons, surely the Cricket Gods owe us that!
As a boy I saw Tom come in at a score of 1 for 3 wickets to face the 9th ball of the innings. he scored a chanceless 163.
Sounds like a class act, Bob.
