Mrs Grace is kept informed
Martha Grace, mum of W.G., took great interest and pride in her boy's cricketing exploits and he responded by keeping her right up to date about his form.
On her 61st birthday, Martha received a telegraph from the lavishly bearded one:
"From W.G.Grace, Huddersfield, to Mrs Grace, Downend. North 187, South, 2nd innings, 57. Self not out 35. Many Happy Returns of the Day."
