Filling WG Grace's shoes

By Brian Halford on Dec 4, 09 12:54 PM

Warwickshire are justifiably proud to have supplied the only player ever to represent England with a surname beginning with the letter Q.

Billy Quaife was a batsman of remarkable longevity for the Bears, even scoring a century on his final first-class appearance, against Derbyshire at Edgbaston in 1928, aged 56. Sussex's decision to release Quaife, who was born in that county, aged 19 must be a candidate for Biggest Clanger in Cricket History. Sussex's loss was Warwickshire's gain to the tune of 33,862 runs, 900 wickets, 330 catches and one stumping.

Quaife played seven Tests for England but averaged just 19 in them. His Tests came at the height of cricket's Golden Age and, a shy, modest man, he was uncomfortable among flamboyant characters and mighty cricketers like Ranjitsinjhi, Fry and Jessop. On his Test debut against Australia at Leeds, Quaife made 20. For the next Test at Old Trafford he was promoted to open - in the slot filled at the start of the series by WG Grace. No pressure!

He remains unique though. Will England ever field another player with a surname beginning with the letter Q?
