Carter took 17 off a Mahmood over on the way to 59 from 43 balls with seven fours and three sixes before edging Chapple to second slip where Laxman took a superb catch.

Lancashire skipper Chapple perhaps missed a trick by not bowling himself for 40 minutes after lunch. He was much the best bowler this morning (10-6-7-2) while Mahmood has been much the least impressive.

Troughton knuckling down admirably. 31 off 90 balls so far.

Woakes soon edged Chapple to the wicket-keeper and departed for two then Miller edged his second ball to slip, out for a duck.
