It's been a day of quiet, worthy cricket but few thrills and a good crowd has watched attentively as the Bears have made sedate progress, not least in the last ten overs which have yielded 15 runs, and now, with the sun starting to drop like a flaming seagull over the flats where Ron Greenwood used to live, suddenly, out of nowhere, a posse of spectators in the south-east corner of the ground bursts into a chorus of "Sussex by the Sea".
