Two handsome crows

By Brian Halford on May 6, 09 06:28 PM

Close: Yorkshire 258 for 2 (91.2 overs). Sayers 114, McGrath 46.

A day startlingly, almost eerily, devoid of bird-life was given a late lift by the arrival of two handsome crows romancing above the Wyatt Stand.

When the gallant Captain Lawrence Oates (Titus to his friends) took his famous walk near the South Pole, in blizzard conditions, saying "I'm just going outside, I may be a while", the temperature was minus 40 degrees Centigrade.
That was at least ten degrees warmer than Edgbaston on May 6th 2009. And, lulled into thinking the weather was okay all I'd brought for lunch was salad! I could have done with a big fat hot pie.
I understand the poor scribes, sat indoors, were deprived of coffee, ... poor petals.

Rather appropriate that Captain Oates should crop up during the yorkshire game. A memorial stone to him is on the gatepost of the Church of The Holy Trinity in Meanwood, Leeds.
It reads:
"Lawrence Edward Grace Oates of Meanwoodside in this parish 1880 - 1912 Captain 6th Inniskilling Dragoons served with distinction in the South
African War. In 1912 he reached the South Pole with Captain Scott and on the return journey hoping to save his companions went out from them to die. His body lies lost in the Antarctic snows.
His name is here by his fellow villages recorded.
A very gallant gentleman."

Commiserations, Bozza, on your luncheon predicament.
I think I detect a slight lack of empathy regarding our coffee machine but, anyway, the happy news is that a replacement arrived in the afternoon.

Thank you, Mr Bremner. I will be sure to visit said memorial stone on my next visit to Leeds.
