Balloonist

By Brian Halford on May 29, 09 07:30 PM

Warwickshire 73 for 1 (8 overs). Trott 31, Troughton 16.

Carter should have been run out on 0 but Moeen Ali missed with an easy throw and Carter celebrated with 20 off 10 balls before holing out to long leg.

At Taunton on Wednesday, Trott looked as though his form was fully returning and he looks the same tonight. Troughton, meanwhile, is again batting like the balloonist off those old "Nimble" bread adverts.

Woakes, meanwhile, will benefit big-time from a break. Good decision to give him a rest.

Agree that taking Chris out of the firing line was the right thing to do. I fear that he may not crack the one day game unless he can get some variation into his bowling. His style and pace seem well suited to getting whacked. Hoggard was the best example, even at his peak when he was rolling over the Aussies, he was still hugely expensive and ineffective in the one day stuff.

On that note, Brian, is there any apparent reason why Boyd Rankin wasn't kept with us as long as possible? Niall O'Brian has been playing for Northants in the build-up, whilst Ranking took 2 wickets with an economy rate of 4 and a bit at the top of the innings against the Windies today. Given that Woakes and Anyon have been struggling at the top of the innings, and how effective Rankin has proved in the World Cup Qualifiers and to some extent the FPT... seems a bit of an odd decision to let him go so early!

Bozza - yes, Woakes's pace is a tricky one at which to bowl in one-day cricket. But he's only 20 of course and if he develops, as I think he will, into a top-class bowler in first-class cricket then letting him taking a breather in T20 (which I believe will implode in the next three years anyway) is a small price to pay.

Emma - yes, as you say, it seems a strange decision. I'll ask the question.
