Trott and Carter added 55 in 15 overs and Carter's batting suggested that his trademark weakness against spin has been addressed before, on 32 from 57 balls, he pushed forward to Rashid and watched in helpless angst as the ball rolled back on to the stumps.

Since then Trott (54 from 117 balls) and Woakes have resisted stoutly. Woakes played one magnificent cover drive off Rashid to the Hollies Stand boundary. The 14 people in the Hollies Stand applauded enthusiastically.
