"Man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward".

Lunch: Somerset 202 for 2 (66 overs). Langer 42, Hildreth 47.

Hildreth has batted a la Bell. Feasted particularly on some loose offerings by Clarke.

We had the obligatory pre-lunch over of twirl, from Botha.

If Somerset avoid the follow-on then this looks pretty much destined for a draw. I don't suppose Warwickshire would be too displeased with a draw and maximum bonus points from their opening fixture.

Some good jobsworths around in this game, in the car park and at the pavilion steps.

Any idea what the position is with the captaincy Brian, I thought Botha was vice-captain, but he seems to be behind Ambrose and Bell in this match.

I didn't think you could get a job in a cricket pavilion or car park unless you'd done a three year jobsworth course with additional post-qualifying work experience. Surprisingly I often find the Edgbaston staff more friendly and obliging than elsewhere.

Hampshire 202 for 2?

GTB - you spotted the slight factual discrepancy. Ta!

Bozza - I don't think there is an official vice-captain. Not sure but I would guess that Botha has plenty on his mind already with quite a frustrating injury.
Re. jobsworths, yesterday, I went over to the pavilion to speak to Ian Bell and asked the steward if he could pop up to the balcony and fish him out. He refused point blank. "But Ian is expecting me. He has just called me to ask me over," I said. It made no difference. The orange-bibbed one just shrugged and stalked off.
Charming.
As you say, the Bears' stewards are among the better ones.
