Balfour-Melville leads the way

By Brian Halford on Apr 27, 09 08:35 PM

To help get us all in the mood for next Sunday's visit of Scotland to Edgbaston here are the scores from Scotland's match against Ireland at North Inch, Perth, in 1909.

Scotland 485 (L.Balfour-Melville 91, W.Thorburn 90no, J.Flood 0-27)

Ireland 169 (D.Chapel 5-59) and 184 (W.Fraser 5-40)

There were nine leg-byes in the match.

Cricket is still played at North Inch, a lovely park ground near the centre of the city beside the River Tay, as it has been for almost 200 years.

Between the world wars, crowds of up to 10,000 gathered there for what locals called their own "Roses" battle: Perthshire v Forfarshire.

Due to vandalism of their nets the club had to hold its pre-season practices elsewhere this season.

Is the missing word "stodgy"?I seem to remember Jim saying that in an interview.

Instead of posting whimsical little flights of fancy here why don’t you indulge in a bit of proper investigative journalism for a change?

The club have made a very generous offer to employees of Birmingham City Council whereby they can purchase a ticket for the West Indies ODI for £35 and kids go free. This is a full £20 less than ordinary members of the public have paid in advance and £10 less than the price charged to members who also have to pay £20 for a junior ticket.

So a member would have shelled out £130 to take a party of 2 adults and 2 children on top of his annual subscription of £130 and upwards. Meanwhile a council employee who may not ever have set foot in the ground before can take the same party for £70.

Talk about rewarding customer loyalty!

Of course the cynics amongst us wouldn’t dare suggest that this generous offer has anything to do with the upcoming planning committee decision.

Would we?

I quite like the whimsical little flights of fancy myself, removes me from the grumpiness I'm surrounded by.
I know it's not "fair", but when was life ever fair, frankly I can't get worked up by the fact that someone can get a ticket for ten quid less than I can.
More whimsy I say!

Ex - Im pretty sure there is someone else at the newspaper group with specific responsibility for the business side of Warwick who will no doubt be on the case if these allegations stand up. Brian is our cricket correspondent and we are very lucky to have him.

Whimsical flights of fancy IN! I say

Tony - Thanks for having a go but hard lines. It was "sticky".

Ex as Kim said I'm not sure how Brian can report it when it hasn't been substantiated by the club yet.
