Patel and Giles
Jeetan Patel will have no restrictions imposed by the New Zealand Cricket Board on the amount he bowls for the Bears next season.
The NZCB understandably limited the number of overs Chris Martin bowled last year but have simply requested that Patel is "reasonably handled".
More good news for the Bears - Ashley Giles will remain director of cricket for the foreseeable future after he failed to make the short-list for the England job.
Giles' immediate priority today was a nice hot bat after he put in a long stint in the field on the first day of the latest three-day friendly. Warwickshire's accident-prone trip continues with Keith Barker and Shaaiq Choudhry reporting hip injuries.
First day: Free State Cricket Union 227 all out. Two wickets apiece for Anyon, Tahir and Botha and one for Carter and Maddy. Warwickshire 87 for two. Maddy 4, Piolet 0, Johnson 29 not out, Clarke 47 not out.

Surprised Ashley didnt make the short list - tho even more surprised by the universal media support for Andy Flower. Probably good for Ashley - not a good time to take over this team.
We will take care of him!
Absolutely spot, on England are in a muddle just now.
Narrow escape for Giles. Whoever gets the job will preside over an ashes drubbing.
Ashes drubbing, disastrous T20 world cup then early exit from 2011 World Cup - misery only relieved by hammering mighty Bangladesh occasionally.
All county cricket's fault of course
English cricket has never been richer but the England team is rubbish. Someone somewhere has messed up big-style.
Jeetan Patel !
Brian - Put me a ease and tell me we have signed a superstar that the stats don't tell the true story.
Please................
Hi Beatie80. I cannot tell a lie...
However, Muttiah Muralitharan he may not be, but Jeetan Patel can give it a bit of a rip, importantly, because, while Ant Botha is a worthy cricketer in many ways, you couldn't call him a massive spinner of the ball.
Also, Patel is apparently a thoroughly decent chap and a good team man. I don't think that should be under-valued.
If Warwickshire play on a raging turner, however, will Botha and Patel outbowl the opposing spinners?
Glad to hear he is a team man. But what target will he be bowling at. All we need now is the new England coach to fancy Bell again and I'd have no idea who will score our runs. Perhaps Ricki will be the man. Help !
Bring back Amiss.
