Bears Chairman Fires Broadside At Senior Batsmen
At Warwickshire's AGM in 1911 club chairman George Cartland expressed strong disapproval at the senior batsmen in the Bears ranks.
He recommended that groundsman Bates be instructed to leave the Edgbaston outfield uncut so that batsmen would have to run the vast majority of their runs, requiring them to be fitter and preventing, as he put it, "stout and elderly gentlemen continuing as long in county cricket as they have done in the past."
