What the hell was going on?

By Brian Halford on Sep 9, 08 11:14 PM

Well that was another ropey old evening with the cricket never likely to get off the ground on a cold, wet, dark night more redolent of November than September. I hung around afterwards to obtain some quotations from a Bears representative on the thrill of next year participating in the Second Division of a competition which will cease to exist at the end of the season (A.D's assertive views are in the Mail tomorrow) and, as the Yorkshire journos were kept waiting for yonks by their intended interviewees (one, appallingly, never showed at all) I was left reflecting what a decent lot, by and large, the Bears players are.

Heading out of rainswept Leeds, still there was a wrinkle left to the night. Does anyone know what the hell was going on with the bottom end of the M42 last night? For miles there was row after row of flashing red signs forbidding motorists to travel in the inside two lanes while a 40mph limit was imposed on the outside lane. Yet, apart from a small section, maybe 200 yards, of road, there was absolute nothing going on. It was not even coned off so there we all were, uncertain of what to do, driving along an open, unfettered motorway but with a successions of signs ordering us across to the outside lane. It all seemed a bit ill-conceived and customer-unfriendly to me. The ECB haven't taken charge of the nation's motorways have they?

I understand that, in tribute to the game at Headingley, they were planning to work for precisely ten minutes, starting at 7.57pm.

I am really glad someone other than me is supplying cake to the weary press.
