The Promotion Kippers

By Brian Halford on Sep 12, 08 12:48 PM

Thirty-six years ago this week, Warwickshire's players breakfasted on champagne and kippers, courtesy of AC Smith, having secured the championship title with a rain-affected draw with Derbyshire at Edgbaston in which Bob Willis took 8 for 44 and Mike Hendrick took 3 for 84.

Has Darren Maddy got the Promotion Kippers on order for Chelmsford next week?

This week was significant, by the way, for two giants of world cricket. In 1948, Don Bradman trod an English field for the final time, for Australia against HDG Leveson-Gower's XI at Scarborough. He bowled the last over (conceding two runs) of a dead draw. Forty-five years later, Melvyn Betts joined the short list of men to have made their first-class debuts at Hartlepool. He first dipped a toe (probably injuring it in the process) into championship cricket for Durham against Somerset. After a first-day washout, he bowled six overs on the second before going down with flu and not bowling for the rest of the match.

Aye, the ever-fragile M.Betts. One of very few Bears players I have known with whom it was not a pleasure to deal.

Where is he now I wonder?

We have offered to host the Under 17 final at Kings Heath CC on the 21st of September, this was called off at Edgbaston, so we have stepped in to help David Lloyd who is sponsoring this event. I will give you start time when its agreed. Pop along if you are free.

Detractors wrinkle their noses at the very mention of kippers and point out that your hands, your pan and your house will smell of them for at least a month after you cook them.

Some people might like their house smelling of kippers for a month. A good day for Warwickshire with Northants and Essex playing out a low points draw. Surely we only have to avoid defeat against Essex now to get promotion.
