Jaik Mickleburgh is an 18-year-old from Norfolk who has been highly thought of for some time at Essex and, having spent last winter in Australia, broke into the first team recently. He is playing beautifully and reached 50 from 57 balls with eight fours and promptly added two more boundaries, including a luscious on-drive, off the persevering Martin, to his tally.

Salisbury has come on from the River End but Mickleburgh is playing an eye-catching innings and, upon reaching 50, was afforded the warmest of ovations - and, in the case of one gentlemen in a red shirt just to the left of the Media Box, a standing ovation.

Bopara, dropped on 0, is playing a shrewd and important supportive role. The 100 stand came up in 17 overs.
