David Wainwright would never have let it happen

By Brian Halford on Sep 5, 08 11:31 AM

So back to the Pro40 now in which Warwickshire need to win their last three games and hope that other results fall their way. Let's hope that Essex's visit on Sunday is less messy than when they attended Edgbaston for a John Player League fixture in 1973. What a fiasco that was. Warwickshire were all out for 148 in 37.3 overs (MJK Smith 58, DL Amiss 38, RN Abberley 6) then it rained and Essex were set a target of 117 in 32 overs. They dutifully knocked off 117 for 6 in 28.5 overs (DJ Brown 5 for 38) and toddled off victorious only for the scorers to discover that the target should have been 119. A meeting of league officials was hastily called to consider what to do. The main question: Would Essex have scored another two runs from the remaining 19 balls with four wickets in hand? Brown had finished his quota but Rouse had still one over to bowl and McVicker two. And Abberley still had eight in his locker.

It was decided to uphold Essex's victory.

As for the scorers - well, it would never have happened on David Wainwright's watch.

We lost our last championship game at Lancs on 13th September 2007

By the time of our next CC game on 17th September a lot of rain will have passed under the bridge.

A succesful season ?

I agree David would never let that happen.

Our best chance of promotion is for it to rain until the end of the Glamorgan game.

Brian - Was hoping you was going to join us on the outfield for a game on Tuesday. The lads fancied giving looping leg spinners some treatment.

We even got Terry Lee's bowling. Despte being 60 + he looked more of threat than Chris Martin recently.

i would forget about promotion in the pro40 and use the games to get players ready/rest for the remaining championship games and for next season.

tell fringe players like poonia, for instance, to just go out there and play. i am still convinced he can become the destructive opener we need in the vein of marcus trescothick.

i agree Mad. The Pro40 is a dead duck so give some young lads a go. And on Sunday I would also allow Michael Powell one more appearance at Edgbaston, to give the crowd a chance to show their appreciation for a great servant to the club.

Beatie, I played one game for Stoneleigh this summer and hung up me boots straight after it. It was a disgrace. My leg-spinners - those creatures of finesse, beauty and artistic delicacy bordering on genius - were treated with total disrespect. I mean how can you expect a ball to turn if they won't let it bounce?

I remember your last appearance....

Mr P - again it comes down to lack of respect. I'm sure both those eight-year-olds who biffed my bowling about that day will, as time pases, mature and grow as people and learn to respect - and be intimidated and bamboozled by - top-drawer leg-spin.
