Bopara, on 0, cut hard at the first ball delivered in this contest by Boyd Rankin - a long hop - and the ball travelled very quickly, head high, to Troughton at point. He knocked the ball up but could not keep the rebound off the grass.

Two balls later, Bopara played an astonishing shot to another short ball. He stood up on the back-foot and thrashed it over mid-off. A dangerous man to supply with a reprieve.
