Arnold Ridley

By Brian Halford on Sep 17, 08 04:29 PM

Essex 244 for 6 (61 overs). Ten Doeschate 26, Middlebrook 2.

Foster, after a sprightly 42, pulls at Rankin and skies a catch to short fine leg where Ambrose jogs round to take a simple chance.

This is entertaining stuff with both teams combining excellence with errors.

Rankin has got a bit out of the track in an encouraging display. Salisbury has provided a vital steady influence while others around have been erratic.

Arnold's gentle approach made him a firm favourite with young and old alike, so much so, that he appeared in all versions of the show, even the stage show which coincided with his 80th birthday in 1976. After 'Dad's Army', Arnold's appearances became fewer, he died in 1984 at the age of 88.
