Evelyn Waugh

By Brian Halford on Jun 2, 08 12:24 PM

Gloucestershire 53 for 4 (11 overs). North 10, Taylor 0.

Westwood makes a nifty change, bringing on Carter who strikes in his first over with an inswinger that traps Marshall (on 1) right in front. In his next over, Carter produces a lovely inswinging yorker which ousts Gidman lbw. Gidman, a Warwickshire target, bags a pair.

Gloucestershire are in just an iota of peril - 63 in front with six wickets left. Can Warwickshire's bowler press on and set up a remarkable win?

Tahir has bowled extremely well and Carter is bowling with pace, swing and accuracy.

Tahir takes two

Gloucestershire 48 for 2 (8 overs). Marshall 1, North 6.

Gloucestershire began at a gallop but then Tahir took two wickets in three balls. Spearman lifted a catch to Powell at mid-off to fall for 20 then Porterfield, on 14, edged to Frost.

It's sultry here and there are a lot of flies. Those damned flies.

Warwickshire 410 all out. Frost 144 not out (317 balls, 15 fours).
Gloucestershire 1 for 0.

Anyon, on two, sent up a simple return catch to Ireland.

Out go Gloucestershire's openers again. There is a very small crowd here today, hardly surprisingly as to pay £14 to get in and another £6 to park to watch a match which is 98.83 per cent dead you would have to be very, very, very enthusiastic.

Hot, muggy, cloudy.

The pied wagtails have divided into groups of two and three.

Apples

Warwickshire 405 for 9. Frost 141, Anyon 2.

Tahir is trapped lbw by Hardinges for 37 in the second over of the morning to end a Bears record ninth-wicket stand against Gloucestershire of 87, Tahir and Frost displacing Messers Rotherham and Smart (1921) from the record books.

Have you noticed how much more difficult it has become lately to take stickers off apples? They used to slip straight off but now they cling on for dear life, often coming off only after much scraping and in bits at a time.

World of Good

By Brian Halford on Jun 2, 08 10:12 AM

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It's overcast but play will begin on time unless the rain forecast for this afternoon arrives early.

Hard to see this one being too gripping today.

Some Warwickshire players are indulging in fielding drills taken by Allan Donald. Others are taking slip catches offered by Ashley Giles. Nice to see cricket-related warm-ups. Volleyball, football and touch-rugby tend to be dangerous to the players' health.

Pied-wagtails are already lively. Five of them.
