Small white triangle

By Brian Halford on May 21, 08 11:35 AM

Middlesex 17 for 1 (9 overs). Smith 6, Shah 0.

Tahir nips a good one away from Godleman and Frost collects the edge to send the batsman on his way for eight.

The pitch is doing a bit and there is cloud cover so, in the circumstances, the Bears desperately need to strike a few early blows here.

Tahir and Anyon are bowling well. Tahir 1 for 3 off 4 overs.

Exactly 100 years ago this minute, Hobbs and Hayward were out there batting on this very plot. The weather tha day was similar to today, warm but humid, but the scoreboard was more reliable.

I fear the reliability of the scoreboard 100 years ago was not as good as it might have been.

My great grandfather Mr Gazebeau used to reminisce about that very era, and assured me that the main board was in the hands of a former sailor who took hefty draughts of navy rum at regular intervals.

My relative found it more reliable to take a long stick of birch and to score it with a slightly blunt pen knife. Such wonderfully innocent times.

That "former sailor", as you put it, was my great grandfather and let me tell you he was, in fact, an admiral in Her Majesty's fleet.
And as for rum he never touched a drop. Except on Tuesdays.
