Old Nance

Warwickshire 34 for 0 (9 overs). Westwood 9, Maddy 15.

Westwood, on 3, slashed at a wide one from Nannes but Joyce dropped the catch at gully. The same batsman then edged the same bowler to the third-man boundary then was beaten, next ball, on the other side of the bat, prompting a strangled lbw appeal, then was beaten again, next ball, outside off-stump.

Maddy edged one from Philander through the slips for four.

Not entirely convincing, then.

An old woman called Nance, a bird-scarer in Wiltshire in the 1830s, used to take a bible out with her into the fields to alleviate the boredom.
