Exactly 100 years ago...

Exactly 100 years ago tomorrow, Warwickshire began a three-day championship match against mighty Surrey at Edgbaston. Surrey won the toss and batted and out of the pavilion to open came Tom Hayward and Jack Hobbs - two all-time greats and, in the case of the latter, perhaps the greatest batsman of all time.

The spectators warmed greetly these two giants of cricket's Golden Age - then saw them both promptly dismissed by Crowther Charlesworth, an erratic part-time bowler (principally a batsman) who 'liked the pop'. What a great game cricket is!

Charlesworth later distinguished himself for the Bears against the Australian touring team at Edgbaston in 1919. When heavy rain arrived it appeared play was off for the day. So our Crowther wandered off to Cannon Hill Park to amuse himself - only for the sun to suddenly emerge. Surprisingly, cricket resumed - but Charlesworth was found to be "in a condition not fit for play".

Aye - you just don't see that in county cricket any more..

Next month is the 100th anniversary of Frank Foster's Warwickshire debut. He liked the booze as well but was still brilliant on the field. It's time Maddy and his team to shed all the namby-pamby fitness drills and get in the bar.

Keep up to date
