Bird scarers in the 19th century

By Brian Halford on May 22, 08 10:54 AM

Good morning ladies and gentlemen.

It's bright but humid at Edgbaston and Udal and Evans are about to resume their partnership, ready to try to challenge the record of Walter Robins and 'Long Jack' Durston of 73 - Middlesex's record tenth-wicket partnership against Warwickshire (at Edgbaston in 1925).

Bird scarers in the 19th century had a terribly gruelling occupation. Hour after hour, day after day, out there alone in the fields just making sure no birds land and scoff the seeds. Blimey.

So if the Willow Warblers and Chaffinches had not been able to resolve their contest in Extra-Time (see yesterday), would they have used your car for the penalty shoot-out ?

Probably. I understand that the birds of Leicestershire are organising, via the internet, a major gathering of all the county's affiliated flocks for Oakham next Monday.
