Solid progress until an interruption caused by rain

By Brian Halford on April 30, 2008 3:12 PM |

Warwickshire 197 for 4 (71.4 overs). Trott 56, Ambrose 46.

Trott and Ambrose have batted very soundly and sensibly today and added 69 in 21.4 overs to give the Bears the upper hand.

Rain has just stopped play although the shower which caused the interruption has already thinned into very slight drizzle and they should not be off for too long. The key word in that sentence being "should".

Have they taken tea yet, out of interest?

There had been no announcement (and still has not been!) so spurred by your message, Emma, I called the scorers and was informed that actually tea began at 3.30pm!
The shower that forced the players off, incidentally, was very, very brief, since when the long-suffering spectators have been gazing for half an hour at a fully covered square in dry weather.
The contempt with which county championship watchers are treated really does beggar belief.

More to the point have they been out there playing touch rugby yet?

I understand that it is going to be a key part of the "EPL" - all the out of work county pros following the merger of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northants will warm up the crowd by playing touch rugby on the outfield. At least that is the PCA's draft plan.

Players of the fragility of Simon Jones and Boyd Rankin will be excused and allowed to play Kerplunk in the bar instead.

There's a apocalyptic black cloud over us at 5-ways at the moment heading your way. Could be off for a while....

Barely a drop of rain has fallen for 45 minutes. The square is fully covered with one groundstaff member standing, arms folded, beside it.
The spectators, resigned and bewildered, sit and wait.
True, for the moment, it has gone gloomy and the light is too poor for play but overall the lack of urgency, the lack of information and the lack of cricket today really has been a poor show.
