A magpie

A magpie drifts down from the sky above the City End like a harbinger of nightfall and settles upon a P.A. loudspeaker as the umpires check their light meters one more time, decide that's it for the night and head off to get ready for this evening's big game - Leamington v Rushall Olympic in the Southern League Midlands Division semi-final play-off.

The close: Warwickshire 128 for 4 (50 overs). Trott 24 (65 balls), Ambrose 9.

Wettest night in living memory down at the New Windmill ground tonight. Thankfully I passed up the opportunity to go to the game, choosing to see 10 overs in the gloom at Edgbaston with a coffee and a dairy milk.

Trott played some "ambitious" strokes to Henderson when he came on with his dibbly-dobblies at the city end this evening. The fine sweep off his first ball was interesting shot selection in the circumstances. He seems like a man eager to make some runs.

The Brakes did it. Even in the rain! Just Stourbridge to go now. Come on you brakes! Frank Whittle would be so proud.
