Star Wars is going 3D

By Ben Hurst on Oct 1, 10 03:52 PM

As a technophobe technology blogger, I can't get excited about plans to transform the Star Wars saga into 3D.

Mainly this is because the last time this series had a revamp, George Lucas went a bit, well, bananas.

For one thing he tinkered around with perfection with 'A New Hope' making Greedo shoot first in the cantina (this infamy by itself should be enough to prevent Mr Lucas from getting out his box of tricks again.).

And then in the same film every inch of space on screen was packed to capacity with entirely superfluous little flying robots which, for me added nothing whatsoever to the film.

At the time Mr Lucas said that the changes meant he was able to do what he had really wanted to in 1977 - but did he really think at the time of Star Wars filming 'What this bleak desert scene needs is busying up with dozens of little flying metal helpers'?

If we apply the same methods to the move to 3D (incidentally, critic Mark Kermode maintains that retro-fitting films which weren't originally made as 3D doesn't work very effectively) then we can expect a feast with almost every scene emerging from the screen.

So constantly being poked in the eye by star destroyers, helpful tiny flying robots and Jar Jar Binks' tongue is the fate awaiting us.

Return of The Jedi will initially return in the eye-popping format in 2012, with the 1999 prequel Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, before the remaining films follow.

Amusingly Star Trek actor Simon Pegg (bet he never imagined in his wildest Spaced days dreams he would be tagged thus) said on twitter: "Watching TPM (The Phantom Menace) in 3D would be like the car actually crashing into your face as opposed to just unfolding before your eyes." [for the record I LIKE TPM, so there!]
