Tens of thousands of Twitter users have been caught out in a scam after being tempted to click on links such as "This you????" and "LOL this is funny".
Internet security experts warn that cyber criminals will increasingly target social networking sites with "phishing" scams, which can be used to sell products like viagra or to steal online identities.
Victims of phishing include Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Leader of the Commons Harriet Harman who have both had automated fake messages sent from their accounts.
Britons will have access to ultrafast broadband speeds by the end of 2011 after cable giant Virgin Media today announced the launch of the UK's first 100Mb service.
Virgin will roll out the new service nationwide at the end of 2010 and throughout next year, while it also said it was expanding its 200Mb pilot as part of the push to become a "broadband nation".
News of the launch comes as Virgin Media said it connected 28,600 households on a net basis - those joining the group, less those leaving - in the fourth quarter of 2009 as its superfast connections attracted new business.
Three years on from the introduction of tougher in-car mobile phone rules, many motorists are still flouting the law, according to a survey today.
Drivers are illegally using hands-held mobiles not just for making and receiving calls but for texting, calling up the internet and even checking messages on Facebook and Twitter, the YouGov poll for car parts company Halfords found.
The survey of 2,100 adults revealed 31% of drivers admitted taking a call while at the wheel and 22% said they had made a call.
A new survey has revealed a mysterious rise in the number of phones reported missing last May and June.
Strangely this coincided with the launch of the new iPhone 3G.
The numbers lost went up by 11 per cent in this period according to life assurance firm CPP.
With the new 4G handsets coming out soon it's fair to say that insurers are bracing themselves for a spate of claims...
The Government's plans for a 50p-a-month tax on households to fund super-fast broadband across the country were condemned by an influential group of MPs today.
The Commons Business Committee branded the levy "regressive", saying it meant poor people would end up paying for a service that only the wealthier used.
It also questioned why ministers wanted to spend so much on upgrading broadband at a time when the public purse was under pressure.
"Facebook skivers" and pointless meetings are among a poll of top office gripes, according to new research released today.
The study of 2,000 office workers discloses a nation of frustrated and thwarted employees who know they may have to work until they are 69 before retirement.
Blocked printers, unproductive meetings and the increasing use of jargon were the leading causes for complaint, with poor technology also irritating staff.
Mobile phone giant Samsung launched a "life changing" smartphone today to rival Apple's all-conquering iPhone.
The Samsung Wave was unveiled in Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress - the world's largest mobile phone trade show - which opens tomorrow.
The Korean manufacturer is currently the world's second largest producer of mobile phones - behind Nokia - but wants a larger share of the rapidly expanding smartphone market, which is dominated by Apple's iPhone.
Thirty prisoners' Facebook pages have been taken down because they were being used to taunt victims, it emerged today.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw said he approached the site three weeks ago to address the issue and requested the pages were removed within 48 hours.
"We've made requests for the removal of 30 sites and they've responded to do that positively, with no single refusal, within 48 hours, so we just want to push this forward," he told the BBC.
Mr Straw said the Government would also be looking at other measures to prevent inmates from accessing web pages and abusing their victims.
Search engine Google will rival Twitter and Facebook with the launch of an expansive new social networking service called Buzz.
Google Buzz incorporates Facebook-style networking features, such as instant messaging and photo and video sharing, into its popular Gmail email service.
Buzz is being rolled out to Google's millions of Gmail customers over the next few days, giving it the potential to become one of the largest social networks in the world behind market-leader Facebook, currently boasting 400 million users worldwide.
Ebay has abandoned its much criticised policy of making sellers offer free postage on some items, it revealed today in a statement.
The online auction giant had come under fire for insisting anyone selling items such as cds, books and dvds must offer to send the item to domestic buyers for free.
In a stroke ebay almost killed off the second hand trade of many smaller items - for example, why sell a book which might only fetch 99p, for the postage to cost more - so leaving the seller out of pocket - a point I made some time ago?
It seems to me that it was a bid to take on play.com and amazon - only they are massive giants able through the economy of scale, to reduce their costs and do deals with postage suppliers.
In ebay's case they were basically insisting that people trying to sell an unwanted book or cd to do the same thing, making many of the purchases uneconomical.
Perhaps ebay felt that the postage, which they don't get a cut of through fees, was an area of possible revenue growth. They may have reasoned that if people bid up to within a close shave of play or amazon, they'd get a cut of that - rather than as before with bidding ending ã1.50 or ã2 short, with the buyer taking into account the postage. That ã2 end price was fee chargeable for ebay - but the postage was not.
In any case there is now maximum postage in place, but at least the small seller market may recover.
Ebay claims it is in response to seller feedback that the change has been made. A cynic would suggest that a dramatic plunge in numbers of items of these categories being sold and therefore a drop in profits might be a more persuasive influence.
Sometimes trying to squeeze a few extra pennies out of something can lead instead to pounds going west...
