facebook application designed for iphone
A version of the social networking site Facebook is being developed for the latest Apple iPhone, it has emerged.
Software engineer Joe Hewitt wrote on his Twitter page: "Just uploaded Facebook for iPhone 3.0 to the App Store for review. :)".
Mr Hewitt said he would post more details about the application, which is being examined by Apple's experts, on Facebook next week.
It should allow users to access a site on their phones similar to the one they see on their computers.
The iPhone is more versatile than a traditional mobile phone, allowing owners to download a series of applications that add features from instant messaging to 3D gaming.
Earlier this month Facebook announced it has begun testing a new, simplified service that loads a more streamlined layout on to screens.
Intended to speed up the process of viewing the site, particularly in countries with limited broadband internet connections, industry experts suggested that Facebook Lite could rival Twitter.
Microblogging site Twitter displays one-sentence updates about what users are doing, whereas Facebook pages have become increasingly cluttered with status descriptions, photographs and numerous other applications
