Call of Duty: World At War review

WORLD at War brings us back to WW2 in the Call of Duty series - leaving behind the modern warfare of the last release.

Those fearing yet another retread of D-Day and Omaha beach can rest easy though as the programmers have decided to look at different aspects of the conflict.

Admittedly we are back to Stalingrad again, but the island hopping war against the Japanese in the Pacific is relatively fresh and we also go through to the final battle in Berlin.

The Japanese are especially difficult opponents, jumping out of holes to try and turn you into a human kebab with a bayonet.

The horror of war is also brought home on that most inhuman of conflicts on the Russian front, with unarmed and wounded prisoners mowed down by the bucketload.

It still feels like it's 'on rails' with a very tight plot to each level, not allowing you much in the way of choice. But it's as tight, slick and exciting as anything out there at the moment.
