Van Hamme gives a European spin on conspiracy theories regarding US infiltration come interference on foreign soils in this third volume starring his young former cat burglar, but yes, that old interfering nosey-parker and all-round modern baddie the CIA are involved.

While that gives leeway for high-tech thriller antics, he chooses to let us meander down more pleasing traditional fictional spy scenarios that call to mind the film version of The Odessa File, TV shows like The Persuaders, but surprisingly less of that Modesty Blaise comic strip feel.

Suzan's stepfather, Ambassador Fitzroy, has been kidnapped, but those who promise to help find and rescue him are more than they seem and not to be trusted. Whereas, old accomplices she's been forced to work with previously, turn up to aid and abet her cause - and yes there's an inevitability that we'll find they're principals in the off-the-records- Interpol agency noted on the very first page of this book, it doesn't spoil the cat and mouse chase scenarios choreographed visually by Aymonde that get us to that point.

Lady S is distinct from Van Hamme's other books translated into English by Cinebook . That it is only on its third volume possibly says something more about reader demand being for male lead characters than the quality of the work within.
