October 2011 Archives

AS AUTUMN slides into winter the summer blockbusters are fast become a fading memory, consigned to the DVD release lists. So what can we look forward to next year and more importantly can we look forward to in the coming cold, dark months?

This is a lean time for comic book to movie releases but G.M. Jordan reveals what is happening in movie land at the moment

Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

Every science fiction/fantasy fan's dream team; Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg coming together to direct and produce a semi live action movie based on the Herge comic strip. Along the way they have roped in Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Jamie Bell to play Tintin. The whole film is part live action with animation laid over the top, giving the film a very distinct look that some people have found a little too odd, almost like it doesn't really know what it wants to be.

Spielberg and Jackson both said they wanted the film to capture the feel of Herge's books and shied away from adding any of their own humour. It must have worked because the Belgium critics enjoyed it; well we think they enjoyed it as one reviewer wrote "It could have been a lot worse."

Whether the film is a box office hit in America where it counts is another matter. American audiences are not known for their ability to deal with complex subject matter or European cinema. Spielberg is hoping the film will turn Americans onto the original books, but with a country that has had to change movie titles so they understand it (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone anyone?) we don't really hold out much hope.

Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance

The directors and producers have stated that Ghost Rider 2 is not really a sequel and more of a reboot. Given that the first was so appallingly bad and universally panned by fans and critics alike the franchise didn't so much need a reboot as burying along with Nicholas Cage's career.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are the directors responsible for the high octane, no plot depth, car crash Crank movies and to be honest the trailer for Ghost Rider 2 looks like it could well be along the same lines. Darker and more in keeping with the feel of the comic book the movie explodes into cinemas in February, can't wait (well I can, I can wait until they actually make a Ghost Rider movie that is worth watching, but I could be wrong about this one.).

Ant-Man.jpg

Ant-Man

Whilst we wait for the Avengers movie to hit, more rumours and announcements have been made about the rest of the Marvel Universe hitting the silver screen. The comic books may be sliding in the sales stakes but the films are getting bigger and bigger (or in the case of Ant-Man, smaller.).

Joe Cornish, fresh from his directorial success with Attack the Block, is penning the Ant-Man script for Scott Pilgrim and Hot Fuzz's Edgar Wright to direct. He is also said to be working on the small screen adaptation of Locke and Key for MTV. Cornish and Wright are both big comic fans but it remains to be seen if they can make Ant-Man a giant at the box office and satisfy the fans.

Fans are still hoping for a Black Panther movie, although with Wesley Snipes still incarcerated for tax evasion in the States it remains to be seen who would step into the black tights and cute little ears to bring the king of Wakanda to life. Also in the running are Iron Fist and Luke Cage or Doctor Strange, but one thing is certain and that is Kenneth Branagh will not be directing Thor 2. Still to come will be Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in the reboot of one of Marvel's best loved character, the franchise has been worth $2.4billion so far, so no pressure on the young British actor then.

Superman: Man of Steel

Superman seems to be flying into a storm of protest with fans divided over the look of the Man of Steel. British Henry Cavill is doing his best to make the Krypton come alive but fans are less than happy with the look of the costume. The designers have kept Superman's underwear under his tights it would appear, much to the dismay of some fans.

Zack Snyder is directing, given that his last two big budget movies have stalled at the box office, Watchmen (see Americans really don't do highbrow subject matter) and the dire Sucker Punch, what fate awaits Superman and can he pull off a daring escape? Well given that most of Snyder's films deal with homoerotism and characters in skimpy, tight fitting costumes it's fair to say the audience will be made up of boys going through puberty, their fathers, the occupants of the Blue Oyster Bar, and women hoping for a hint of rippling muscle. Having seen the screen shots already released I could say I was looking forward to the movie's release but I would be lying.

Until next time keep your popcorn dry!

ERNIE COLON's Inner Santum is released by NBM this December.

Colon made his name drawing comics for such diverse publishers as Harvey and Warren, plus DC Comics where he was also an editor.

With Inner Sanctum he brings to comics life tales based on one of the most fondly remembered mystery and horror radio shows in American history.

The black and white collection includes:

The Horla: A man is haunted by a mysterious, grotesque being only he can see... It seeks to enslave him, but in the end reveals its true intent - to destroy him.

Death of a Doll: An unidentified corpse in the morgue intrigues a reporter, who sets out to identify her and how she died. On her was a doll that cries "Kara Nana", another name for the devil.

The Undead: A young woman discovers an obituary for her living husband.

Alive in the Grave:
Seeing a man collapse in an alley, our hero rushes to help only to find that the man is dead. Jobless and desperate, he takes the man's wallet, only to find out later he may not have been dead! He rushes back only to find that the man has been removed and buried...Perhaps alive.

Pandora's Box Volume 5 - Envy

Cinebook

For those into the paradoxes of conspiracy theory and a penchant for the work of Phillip K. Dick this book might just be for you.

Tibor and Eva work for a software engineering corporation wherein an accident occurs and their own worldview falls in upon itself.

Too many ideas, not enough time for resolutions, and losing the thematic message of envy along the way. It didn't work for me as a story though its cutting pace will probably appeal to a younger modern movie-fixated audience as will its tendency towards a cuter American art style in places.

BBC RADIO 4 will be broadcasting a 30 minute show looking back on 70 years of the Classics Illustrated comic book series at 11.30am today, Tuesday 25th October.

Actor Bill Paterson marks the anniversary by exploring the publication's impact and recent revival on Britain's bookshelves.

Classics Illustrated, the comic book adaptations of classic literature, began in America in 1941, starting with an adaptation of The Three Musketeers, followed by Ivanhoe and The Count of Monte Cristo, and soon became a favourite reading material for children and many adults.

Paterson (featured in the photograph above holding his own first edition of Jane Eyre) reveals his lifelong passion for the comic as he charts the fortunes of Russian Jewish immigrant Albert Kantner, who conceived the idea of a comic book series as self-contained abridgments of a literary work into a single comic book.

Over a thirty year period a vast range of literary classics were adapted; from The War of the Worlds, to Sherlock Holmes, Moby Dick, Treasure Island, Faust and Dr No. These publications later became popular in Britain but the series regularly came under fire for distracting children from reading the original stories.

Contributors include Professor John Sutherland and British bookseller Jeff Brooks who in recent years revived the comic book versions using the original artwork with new covers.

Readings are provided by Buzz Hawkins, Jayne Ashbourne and Barnaby Gordon.
