Armando Catalano the Scorpion stands over the corpse of his newly discovered father, the late Pope of Rome and as he turns to face Cardinal Trebaldi and his henchmen lines are drawn in the sand for all that will follow as this saga unfolds.

The Scorpion's recalls youth and what transpired to make him the adventurer he is becomes ravelled within the here and now, where amidst his wenching ways he uncovers clues to help him attempt to bring down the cardinal. But you don't get to be the power behind the papal throne by being a fool, and the hunted becomes the hunter once more, capturing The Scorpion and preparing to torture him.

Escape comes just as unexpectedly by the hands of Mejai, the Egyptian beauty who nearly poisoned him in the previous volume. And thus ends over forty pages of some of the well-crafted comics created this millennium in the story titled The Stone Cross.

Fortunately, Cinebook were still collecting two books per volume when this came out, and it concludes with the actual The Devil in the Vatican story where the events of 4th century Jerusalem impact on 18th century Rome wherein The Scorpion finds he may have allies, albeit possibly for their own gain, within the Vatican.

Rescued by a sea captain, Scorpion and Mejai head for Constantinople. Not that it's all plain sailing, for the skipper is Ansea Latal, another deadly beauty... I'll not spoil the mystery but it's a wonderful romp of the highest order.
