Happy Birthday to the Beano
THE Beano has been keeping British children gripped with subversive humour and a stream of iconic characters for 70 years now.
Generations of youngsters have enjoyed the weekly thrill of catching up with the likes of Dennis the Menace, Lord Snooty, the Bash Street Kids and the Three Bears.
And next week will see a series of events to mark the 70th birthday. Birmingham artists Hunt Emerson and Laura Howell are closely involved.
Laura and Hunt who are responsible for the misadventures of the Ratz, Les Pretend and Johnny Bean will see their artwork included in a Beano and Dandy exhibition at the Cartoon Musuem in Russell Square, London from July 30- November 2.
And Laura, from Northfield is to give a talk on 'the Beano' style at the launch of a Beano Birthday exhibition at the University of Dundee on Wednesday, July 30.
The exhibition feautures many never before seen orginal relics from the archives of publisher DC Tomson.
Laura has enjoyed a meteoric rise since her talent was spotted and developed by the likes of Hunt and John McCrea on the Stripsearch course a couple of years ago.
She became the course's third female award winner, following in the footsteps Asia Alfasi and Michiru Morikawa, winning an International Manga and Anime Festival award for her Bizarre Adventures of Gilbert and Sullivan strip.
Her weekly strip the Mighty M, the adventures of a frustrated wannabe rock star, is appearing in the Guardian every Saturday and her Sneeky the Elephant strip debuts in the DFC next Friday.

I'd love to see the Beano artists render 70-year old versions of their characters – an OAP Dennis etc.
John Freeman, the renowned comic book editor, writer and journalist, sent me the following information regarding a Beano tribute:
British comics news and links site downthetubes.net is proud to publish the first art and memories we’ve received from a range of creators, including Garen Ewing, Stephen Baskerville and Kev F Sutherland, to mark The Beano’s 70th Birthday this month.
The special tribute section can be found at:

Anyone else who wants to offer their own memories or art, can send them to the downthetubes forum.
