A sort of culinary mania has swept through my female colleagues over the past two days.

It started when one of our reporters announced that she had enrolled for a Mediterranean cookery course at night school in Sutton Coldfield. Since then, two of her workmates have enrolled plus a friend from Central News.

This is encouraging because - in my circle of friends at least - there was once an attitude among women that rustling up a meal in the kitchen somehow undermined their feminist credentials.
